You could make complete tracks or create backing tracks for your demos back in the days when 4 track cassette was all that most amateur musician’s could afford. Especially for someone like myself who bought the hardware back in the late 1980’s.Īs a side-note, while the M1 sound is iconic, it was the 8 part multi-timbral sequencer and drum samples that made it so useful for the bedroom studio. The fact that you can have every M1 sound made on an iPad is still pretty damn amazing. Obviously, when it comes to editing and DAW usability the VST wins hands down. We can recreate this sound in Serum by sampling the Organ 2 waveform out of the M1 vst and using Serum’s wavetable features. The original sound was created using a practically unprocessed wavform from the M1 called the Organ 2. This software can import System Exclusive files (.SYX). The sound has made it into countless dance and pop classics since the sound came into existence on the KORG M1 rompler.

Not saying the emulated effects are terrible, but Woody’s test clearly demonstrates this is a weakness with the VST. The M1 software runs as a VST or AU plugin and includes all of the original Korg-manufactured ROM sounds. We have five volumes of sounds for the M1 and provide the original factory sounds for free when you purchase any of the five volumes. Anyone who has spent a lot of time with the hardware will really notice this as the biggest difference in the VST. On the other hand, the effects (Reverb, Chorus, etc.) are a large part of the sound of an M1, they have a particular character. Every download listed on this page that starts with 'F0 30' is NOT for a M1 or M1R. But has E0/E7 rather than F0/F7 head and tail bytes. The VST sounds like a HiFi version of the hardware. 858.syx is all data dump - a few bytes bigger than Korgs factory preload file 1491.syx is all data dump - same size as Korgs factory preload file 1741.syx is weird. The M1 samples, as primitive as they are today, still impress with their fidelity.

In the case of the M1 I find the VST to be in some ways better than the actual hardware because of the pristine samples without analogue conversion. Even on a Digital Synth, D/A conversion plays a role in the sound for good or for bad.
